Advanced Networking

WELCOME! You have entered the "No B.S. Zone"
..."you'll find this content very refreshing!" ; )
- Linda Musgrove, President of TradeShow Teacher

One of the things I stress to all clients is the importance of networking; particularly when at an event in your industry! For attendees of the Exhibitor Show this is one of the few times of the year that we are around people that “understand us” and what our jobs entail; this can apply to most industries – so be sure to take advantage of networking opportunities and connect with people in your industry!

In December 2006 I covered some Networking Tips in the Trade Show Tactics Newsletter and now I will share with a few advanced tips on how to set a Networking Plan into action so you spend your time wisely! If you just go to Networking Events and spend your time small talking with everyone, and don’t “get down to business” with the key people that matter, I promise that you will be wasting your valuable time!

Target Who You Want To Meet BEFORE the Networking Event
(then apply the tips in the December 2006 Trade Show Tactics Newsletter)

  • ·        Think about the people who are attending and who you want to meet, if you can do a little research ahead of time on their recent accomplishments or activities this will work to your advantage – meet as many of these people as you can!

·

If you don’t know a particular person you want to meet, then target a specific industry or certain types of vendors, or a certain type of position/title. Have some talking points about important items relevant to the attendees you want to meet.

Evaluate the Room

If you do not know who will be at a particular Networking Event ahead of time then take a moment to “observe the room” before you start…

     -  Find the conversations creating the most buzz and join in

     -  If there is a Speaker at the event, find them and introduce yourself, ask if there is anything you
        can do for them

Be a Resource

Instead of attacking attendees with information about YOU, spend time helping THEM – you never know who THEY know!!!

     -  Answer other attendee’s questions and provide resources/people for them to contact

           -  Make Introductions when possible

         -  Spend your time asking what you can do for them - NOT telling them what they can do for you!

As I have previously mentioned, Trade Shows deliver an incredible amount of Networking Opportunities for you to take advantage of! Below I listed all of the Networking Events I attended while at the Exhibitor Show in March - in addition to the 11 seminars I attended AND walking the show floor every day for about 4 hours meeting people/vendors - so you can see a perfect example of how to maximize Trade Show connections!

I am not kidding when I say that I take networking serious and SO SHOULD YOU, the business benefits are HUGE! The Exhibitor Show was in Las Vegas and I did not attend any shows, no gambling and no clubs; what I did get was an opportunity to spend some “Relationship Building time” with existing contacts, meet an invaluable amount of NEW contacts and NEW customers, as well as NEW relationships with industry professionals and vendors! GET SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR NETWORKING!!! Call me if you need some help!

YES it was a VERY TIRING SCHEDULE, but the results have delivered thousands and thousands of dollars in business! While at the show I was non-stop; AFTER the show was over I went for a massage and spent the weekend in Jamaica decompressing! Then got right back to work! THIS is the way you should be working your Trade Shows; I am certain that if you focused this amount of energy at your next Trade Show YOU would be a slam-dunk when promotions/raises are discussed!
